Stoma Care
The goal of stoma care is to ensure that the stoma remains healthy, functional, and free from complications such as infection or blockages.
What is stoma care?
Stoma Care refers to the proper maintenance of an opening in the abdomen that has been created by an operation. This opening is needed when an organ such as the colon or urinary bladder has been removed or rerouted in the body. The stoma allows the body to eliminate waste that would have been passed through the removed or rerouted organ. Proper Stoma Care is a crucial part of home care for patients who have undergone surgeries and have openings in their abdomen.
Our specialist carers provide stoma care in these ways:
- Cleaning the stoma site: Our caregivers will make sure they wash their hands before starting the stoma care process and use non-irritating, gentle cleanser and water to clean the stoma site.
- Changing the stoma bag: Our caregivers will remove the old stoma bag and clean the stoma site before carefully applying a new bag. They will make sure that the bag fits snugly without being too tight or too loose.
- Emptying the stoma bag: Our caregivers will empty the stoma bag when it is around one-third to half full. They will detach the bag from the adhesive wafer and follow manufacturers' instructions for emptying, cleaning, and reapplying the bag.
- Ensuring proper nutrition: Our caregivers will encourage the service user to follow a balanced diet and stay hydrated. This helps to promote healthy bowel movements and prevent digestive issues.
- Supporting emotional well-being: Having a stoma can be emotionally challenging for patients. Our caregivers can provide emotional support, encouragement, and help patients to maintain their dignity and independence.
